About Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia was born in Sydney, Australia on February 4, 1975, Imbruglia was one of four sisters and grew up in a tiny beach town. After becoming a teen actress and landing a spot on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, Imbruglia decided that she would rather be a singer, and moved to London in 1996 to try her luck. It was a wise move, as she was soon signed to the RCA U.K. label.

Deciding to release a single before her full-length debut, the Pop/Rock track “Torn” was issued in 1997, and no one could have predicted its massive success which was produced by former Cure member Phil Thornalley and written by Ednaswap, the single spent a total of 14 weeks at number one, sold over a millon copies, and broke the record for most airplay in U.K. history, the single also topped the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Later her debut album, “Left of the Middle”, was a major hit in Australia, the U.K., and the U.S. upon its release in early 1998. Follow-up singles “Smoke”, “Big Mistake,” “Wishing I Was There” also moderately did well. The album went 2 x Platinum in US and also won her a award for Best New Artist nomination in 1998 MTV Video Music Awards and was also nominated for Best Female Video (”Torn”). Later a month after she won 6 ARIAs (Australian Record Industry Association Awards) including Best Single, Best Female Artist, and Best Pop Release.

In 1999 her success continued as she received her first 3 Grammy Awards nominations for Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (”Torn”), and Best Pop Album (Left Of The Middle). As well as an nomination for American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist. Later Natalie took home 2 Brit Awards for Best International Newcomer and Best International Female Artist. She also appeared in an soundtrack for movie “ Stigmata” with song called “Indentify”. By the end of year she took few more ARIAs (Australian Music Industry Association Awards) for Best Female Artist and the Outstanding Achievement Award, and had also been nominated for Highest Selling Australian Album.

After whirlwind praise, Imbruglia disappeared for the rest of the ’90s. She returned in 2001 with her 2nd LP “White Lillies Island” which was released in UK with the first single “That Day” which received massive radio airplays and easily settled in UK top20.

Natalie also released “White Lillies Island” in US in 2002 with singles “Wrong Impression” and “Beauty On The Fire.” But the album was not as successful as her debut as it peaked at #35 on Billboard 200 and the first single “Wrong Impression” also didn’t achieved much success as it reached on #64 on Hot 100. Later she returned to acting in 2003 with a supporting role in British spy spoof Johnny English, playing alongside Rowan Atkinson. In December 2003 she married her long-time boyfriend Daniel Johns, lead singer of Silverchair.

In April 2005, Imbruglia released her third studio album Counting Down The Days to the UK, which in its first week of sales hit number one in UK album charts. The first single from this album “Shiver” became her longest running single on the UK Charts since her debut “Torn” and also topped the UK Airplay charts for several weeks as well as European charts. Later she released her second single the title track “Counting Down The Days”
