About Never, The
A senior thesis and a 30 foot TV screen. That’s how The Never got their start. Then they were called The b-sides. It was the spring of 2000. Guitarist Noah Smith gathered a few friends from his hometown of Pittsboro, North Carolina, formed a band, and presented it as his final high school project. The performance included props, costumes, a 30 foot TV screen replica, and hundreds of TV dinners; it was a bit dramatic. After Smith graduated, it seemed an obvious decision to keep the band together. A palpable chemistry had been struck upon, particularly between Smith and also guitarist Ari Picker. For their first few records, the band called upon the talented Ken Mosher (Squirrel Nut Zippers) to introduce them into the music scene while playing bass in the band. Although significantly older than the recent high school graduates, Mosher was so impressed by the band’s precocious songwriting ability that he enthusiastically joined. Their first release, Yes Indeed, The b-sides, Quite!, became the top selling independent release in North Carolina in 2001. This success was accomplished by playing over 300 shows, gaining a strong local fan base and securing college and commercial airplay; the traditional labor of an independent rock band. After a few changes to the band’s lineup, a new name seemed appropriate. The Never was officially formed, with the foundation of Smith and Picker’s complimentary songwriting intact. Brothers, members of Vibrant Green and friends of the band, Jonny and Joah Tunnell stepped in to fill the rhythm section and the new band began writing. The Never were picked up by MoRisen Records in February of 2003, and began recording their first LP with producer John Plymale (Superchunk, Squirrel Nut Zippers). The self-titled album was a success, selling over 4,000 copies nationwide. In October 2003 The Never won a Battle of the Bands competition in Raleigh, N.C., in which first prize was an opening slot for R.E.M. The Never’s music can be quickly labeled as pop rock, but the subtlety of the mix of different influences is remarkably more complex than such a terse label conveys. Pop rock is not typically known for the incorporation of seemingly baroque piano and string arrangements, the haunting voice of a musical saw or the organic twang of bluegrass; but The Never somehow blend them together with classic pop rock conventions such as doo-wop harmonies and mercilessly catchy melodies. They have the ability to reinvent their influences without coming across as contrived or derivative.
